  1. Look at the flight attendants

This is the number one thing that helps me when I start to panic while flying. I figure the flight attendants understand the plane better than me and they know when they should be worried. If they seem calm and collected, everything is business as usual.

 

  1. Remember the statistics

Flying is the safest means of transportation. Keep reminding yourself that.

 

  1. Distract yourself

Books, movies, magazines, music, work – whatever it is, keep doing it. For me, watching movies is usually the most effective because it cancels out most of the noise around me.

 

  1. Use noise-cancelling headphones

The white noise and engine noises freak me out. When a sound changes, I start to worry. How ’bout eliminating the noise completely? Noise-cancelling headphones do just that.

 

  1. Sleep

This is just not possible for some people. I have a hard time sleeping on planes, but I always try. If I’m extra anxious about a long flight, I’ll even take a dramamine to try and knock me out. It doesn’t always work but when it does, it’s such a relief!, One great tip that has helped me is to take an extra-thick jersey or hoodie, to cover your head. The general darkness helps settle my nerves sometimes.

 

  1. Sit in the front of the plane

If you have the ability to choose your seat, choose a seat in the front of the plane. The front of typically quieter and smoother than the back.

 

  1. Figure out where your worry is coming from.

I think my fear of flying comes from a lack of control. Who is this random pilot? How long have they been flying? What happens if something goes wrong? My lack of control makes me feel like I’m just randomly barreling through the sky. I have to remind myself that everything is fine. The pilot doesn’t want to crash either. I’m not in control of the plane and thank god because I don’t know how to fly this thing.

 

  1. Have a flight routine.

Having a routine or schedule is so helpful especially on long flights. Maybe plan to get up and walk a lap every hour and a half or journal for 30 minutes. Maybe get up to brush your teeth after every meal. On really long flights, my friend and I like to bring sheet face masks for the last hour of the flight so we can leave the plane feeling refreshed. All of these little to-do list items help make flying a lot more enjoyable for me.
